June 14th & 15, 2014
Had a blast this weekend as my friend and tattoo artist co-worker, Bazzar and I took on the challenge of completing an 11ft x17ft chalk mural at the Pasadena Chalk Festival. We were super prepared Saturday morning and we were ready to chalk it up all weekend, despite the Friday the 13th long working day festivities (total tradition for tattoo shops to have $13 tattoos on all Friday the 13ths...the shop was still cranking out tattoos at 4am - so you can imagine our sleep deprivation.) However- we were ready to take on the task of creating a #bigassloteria game, also known as Mexican Bingo.
The crowd was full of nostalgia as they surrounded our piece and recognized certain cards such as La Sirena, El Borracho, etc...And on Saturday we actually made the decision that we were going to make this game interactive. What does that mean? It means that we were going to play the game! We set it up so that we had 2 players and we even had the giant Pinto Beans that everyone uses to mark their card. (Everyone keeps asking me what the heck it was that we used - potatoes! Tell me those potatoes don't look like giant pinto beans???)
Regardless, we were on full throttle in order to complete this piece early on Sunday so that we can start playing and after 21 hours of chalking (keep in mind it's 2 of us, so that makes it a total of 42 chalking hours over a period of 2 days dedicated to this piece) we were ready to play! I had such a great time interacting with family and friends that came on down - and thank you so much Bazzar for dealing with this "Reina of Chalk" that kept bossing you around! Hahaha! Thank you to everyone that voted for our piece - we didn't get the People's Choice Award- but oh man!!!- it sure felt like we won every time played the game! Thank you again - and we're already brainstorming for next year…so if you have any ideas, please feel free to place it in the comments.
We also got very lucky to have footage of a Loteria game in action. Check it out:
